BookBagChallenge 2011 Success

beremedy Bookbag Challenge Huge Success

beremedy, in conjunction with the Forsyth Community, announces the success of its annual Bookbag Challenge.

March 30, 2011-Cumming, GA- More than 350 children in Forsyth County will have food over spring break thanks to beremedy, North Forsyth High School, and Forsyth natives.

beremedy hosted its annual Bookbag Challenge between March 20 and March 30. Participating in the event were followers of beremedy and multiple organizations from North Forsyth High School. The event was aimed at combating childhood hunger over spring break.

“Many students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. During breaks, they often do not have enough to eat in their homes,” said Blake Canterbury, CEO of beremedy, an organization recently featured on CNN. “Our aim was to fill over 350 bookbags with food for these students to take home over spring break to help with their need,” he added.

Upon hearing of the challenge, multiple student organizations, including the National Honor Society, DECA, National Spanish Honor Society, FCCLA, and the Spanish Club at NFHS all jumped at the opportunity to help. The school collected over 1,600 nonperishable foods for the event and helped fill 372 bags of food. Also contributing the event were the North Forsyth 400 Rotary Club, Donut Connection, and the Forsyth County Sheriff offices.

“We’re humbled by the response of North Forsyth and the community. It was overwhelming and we feel blessed to be a part of it,” added Canterbury.

The food will be distributed by the Forsyth County School Social Workers to the children and families who need it most over the next few days.

###
beremedy is an organization connecting people who need help with those who want to give it via social media. We feel that most people would help if they simply knew the needs in their local community. Through applications like Twitter and Facebook, beremedy alerts people when someone in their community needs help. Members then respond to the message or pass on the message to those they feel can.

Volunteer to Help Gabriel

Word from the Woodstock Fire Department is that this event was a great hit! Thanks for all who went out!

NEED NEED: Volunteers

Imagine finding out your 11 month old baby has an aggressive tumor that only affects 3 in 1,000,000 children. That's exactly what happened to a local Woodstock family. Starting soon, little Gabriel Sierra will undergo an aggressive 52-week regiment of chemo and radiation. We're asking that you help be the remedy to this family in need.

This Saturday an event will be held to help Baby Gabriel and his family. Starting at 9 am and going until the party ends, there will be a Classic Car Show at the Old Walmart at the intersection of Highway 92 and Canton Road. The event, sponsored by helpgabriel.org and the Woodstock Fire Department, is looking for volunteers to help with the event. To see how you can help, visit www.helpgabriel.org and click on the link to the Classic Car Show.

Bed

Donated in 15 min: The need was met in just about 15 minutes by @RaganHolt via Twitter!  Thanks so much for all of your help.

Stories of hope is what it's all about. A 20 year old getting clean and putting his life back together decided to return home. As a mother would, she welcomed her son home. The only problem, there is only one bed in a single mother’s home and as a mother would... she gave the bed to her son. After 2 days, the son gave his mother her bed and began to sleep on the floor himself. The organization that submitted this need believes there should be one more bed in this home and so do we! Here is your chance to be the remedy for this reunited family! Just to be clear, here is what is needed:

  • 1 Full sized Mattress
  • 1 Full Sized Boxspring
  • 1 Full Sized Frame

**There is also another cool part to this story. If you love stories like we do, this is one that truly shows how to pay it forward.  Recently we helped Amanda, a single mom with 6 kids who needed beds for her children.  See her story here.. http://beremedy.org/success/item/101-beds Amanda told us she will help someone else when she is able. Two beremedy, needs later, Amanda was the remedy by providing clothes to another family. Amanda, is still paying it forward once she heard about Kecia's story, she shared it with beremedy.  Thank you Amanda for continuing to be the remedy.

Mattresses and Boxsprings

Great news! This need has been met in just under 4 hours! Thanks to several donors, we got all beds we needed, a tv AND kitchen table and chairs. Watching people come to the aid of their neighbors never gets old. Way to be the remedy!

NEW NEED: Mattresses and Boxsprings

For some reason, around the holidays there's an influx of house fires. We can't imagine what it's like to lose every tangible part of the place you call home but we try to empathize with those that know what it's like. Daphany and her daughter have recently experienced this feeling of loss. What's great is that they've been surrounded by their community of friends and family for support but are still in need of a few things. They've been given two queen-sized bed frames but no mattresses or box springs. Let's give them a place to sleep! Just so we're clear, here's what we need:

  • 1 Queen Sized Mattress
  • 1 Queen Sized Boxspring
  • 1 Queen Sized Mattress
  • 1 Queen Sized Boxspring
  • Table
  • Chairs
  • tv (not asked for but donated)

If you've got a sofa or kitchen table and chairs you'd like to get rid of, they need those too.

If you can help with this need or know someone who can, email Jamie Prentice at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . She'll work her magic and make sure any questions you have are answered and donations get to the people in need. Thanks for being the remedy!

Beds

This need was met in just a few days above and beyond what we needed! We actually had to turn away some donors! We hate to do that but it's a great problem to have. Thanks so much to those who helped and were willing to give! This need has been remedied!

NEED: Beds

Have you always had a bed to sleep in? If you haven't, you can relate to a family with no beds, right? If you HAVE always had a soft place to lay your weary head, it's difficult to imagine life without it, isn't it? Imagine THIS: Your WHOLE house gets burned down, the people in your community come to your aid and you finally have a roof over your head. Amazing. Just one catch, you have no beds. You're a single mom with 6 children and no beds. That sounds like a rough situation in itself. There's a family that fits this description living on the south side of Atlanta. We really want to get them some beds. All we need now is 1 set of bunk beds!

Below is what we needed initially. Everything has been donated except for one more set of bunk beds! How awesome is that?

  • Set of bunk beds (including mattresses)  - This is all that's left
  • Set of bunk beds (including mattresses)
  • Adult sized beds (mattresses + frames)
  • Adult sized beds (mattresses + frames)
  • iMac Computer (not requested but donated out of kindness)
  • Signed guitar by the band Third day for little boy (not requested but donated out of kindness)
